TAMIU Meets Reps from 40 Mexican Universities Friday

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) representatives will discuss online degrees and programs with leaders of 40 Mexican universities comprising the Asociación Nacional de Universidades e Instituciones de Educación Superior (ANUIES), a Mexican higher education consortium, Friday.

The meeting, the first of its kind in the United States, will be Friday, April 12 from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at the Western Hemispheric Trade Center.

María Eugenia Calderón-Porter, director of the TAMIU Binational Center, said the meeting will be an opportunity for TAMIU to make presentations to ANUIES about the various online degrees and certificates it offers to students globally.

Participants, who include those from ANUIES’ northern Mexican region comprising Zacatecas, Coahuila, Chihuahua, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas, will also learn about TAMIU’s distance education capabilities through a demonstration.

“We are preparing our students to be members of the global community,” said Calderón-Porter, “When technology benefits everyone, we need to raise awareness because online education helps everyone, including students and parents.”

She said students from México can enroll in dual degree programs as well as various undergraduate and graduate online degree programs at TAMIU from the convenience of their own homes in their country without the need to travel to the United States. Also, TAMIU students might become interested in dual degree programs by taking courses offered by Mexican universities, she added.

During the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will be signed between TAMIU and the Instituto Tecnológico de Nuevo Laredo.

“We anticipate this to be the beginning of multiple discussions that will support the development of a student that is prepared to participate in a global community,” Calderón-Porter said, “Some of these courses, degrees and certificates are available in Spanish. Some are fully online and some are hybrid.”
