How to better lead and manage a nonprofit organization is the focus of a new online, non-degree Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership and Management  to be offered at Texas A&M International University this Fall.

The certificate, offered fully online to bachelor’s degree holders, is part of the University’s Master of Public Administration (MPA) program and includes four classes, or12 semester credit hours, said Dr. Margaret Leigh Broxton, TAMIU assistant professor of public administration.

The postgraduate certificate, with each class lasting five weeks, can be completed in one year.  It is ideal for those  working in nonprofit organizations, master’s  degree holders or graduate students in any discipline,  or those interested in nonprofit organizations.

“We recommend this program for those who work or volunteer in nonprofit organizations; city and county governments; community, family and private foundations and those who have control over third-sector funding,” Dr. Broxton said.

Classes include Survey of Nonprofit Leadership and Management, Philanthropy, Fund Raising for Nonprofit Organizations, Grant and Contract Management, Nonprofit Law and Process, Strategic Planning and Fiscal Administration for Nonprofits, International Nonprofit Management and Leading for Performance in Nonprofit Organizations, Broxton said.

She said TAMIU is offering the new Certificate because 50 percent of TAMIU MPA graduates work for nonprofit organizations. There are over 80 registered nonprofit organizations in Laredo, Broxton explained.

“We invite all community members interested to participate in this program,” Broxton said, “It gives students an in-depth knowledge of how nonprofits should be managed and led. From grant management and contracts to legal compliance and strategic planning, this program teaches you everything you need to lead a sustainable nonprofit organization.”

University office hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
