More than 40 students and their Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) literacy tutors will be recognized for their participation this semester in literacy tutoring at  Henry Cuellar Elementary School Tuesday, May 7 at 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

The Literacy Enrichment Center initiative brings TAMIU teacher candidates into Cuellar Elementary for one-on-one tutoring with “struggling readers” to help build literacy skills and self-confidence.

Tutors are TAMIU College of Education students in teacher education and communication disorders programs. Supervision of the twice-weekly program is provided by a TAMIU faculty member and an assistant.

The program is in its fourth semester of operation at Cuellar Elementary and part of a formal literacy partnership formed by TAMIU and United Independent School District in Fall 2011. More than 150 students have received one-on-one support to improve their reading and writing skills.

The ongoing literacy enrichment project and partnership depend on grants and donations for support.
