The National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) has announced its 2013 Latinas Learning to Lead (LLL) Program Fellows. After a competitive application process, Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) senior Jacqueline Verastigui is among 22 students selected to participate in the weeklong leadership development program in Washington, D.C.

“We received an incredible pool of talented young women and I am very excited to be able to meet each of the 22 fellows,” said Ann Marquez, NHLI president.

NHLI’s LLL goal is to promote and foster the development of college-age Latina leaders through training, mentoring opportunities, access to national networks and tools to create a community impact.

Session topics for the program include public speaking skills, resume building, and effective listening. This year’s class will also participate in a new component of the program: Fellows will shadow an NHLI alumna from the Executive Leadership Program (ELP) for a day. Each ELP alum has over 10 years of working experience and has undergone training at Harvard University and the NHLI’s Center for Creative Leadership.

“Really, I couldn’t do this without the help of my TAMIU advisors, Dr. James Norris and Dr. Mark Menaldo for helping me stay on track with my studies at TAMIU, my professors, Dr. Penny Vlagopoulos and Dr. Mehnaaz Momen for showing me the value of my background and Jonathan Martínez, associate director of the TAMIU Writing Center, for allowing me an opportunity to grow in my employment,” Verastigui said in noting who she recognizes in accepting the honor.
