Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) has awarded over $2 million to hundreds of outstanding Laredo ‘Class of 2013’ high school graduates to assist them throughout their four years of University education.

Laura Elizondo, Financial Aid director, said TAMIU has awarded a total of $2,024,000 to local incoming, first time freshmen, which will sustain their four years of TAMIU study.  The amount awarded for this year alone is $506,000, she said.

Thanks to generous donations from community philanthropists and by encouraging students to apply early for financial aid, TAMIU has been able to continue awarding a steady and large amount of scholarships over the years, Elizondo said.

“We always encourage students to complete their financial aid application or FAFSA early,” she said, “By doing so, we are able to not only assist them with academic-based scholarships, but also with grants.”

While students can continue to apply for financial aid throughout the year, they need to do so early in order to take advantage of available grants, Elizondo said.

She said students can still submit their FAFSA application to apply for grants, work-study and loans this  Fall.

“The FAFSA application and all other required documents must be submitted by Thursday, Aug. 1 to ensure students will receive their award letters before classes begin on Wednesday, Aug. 28,” Elizondo said, “For our Mexican students, they still have until Monday, Aug. 26 to submit the Mexican Tuition Waiver Application and all required documents for this coming Fall Semester.”

At this time, students can still submit their FAFSA to apply for Pell Grant, work-study and loans, Elizondo said.
