TAMIU Gets $241,548 Funding for Student Mentoring, Leadership Program

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) has received a $241,548 Award from TG as part of its Philanthropy Program.

The TG Award will fund "Cultivating the Mind: Student Success through Mentoring and Leadership," an awareness program to help students and their families acquire pre-enrollment knowledge about higher education opportunities available to them through information sessions, one-on-one meetings and workshops. Upon student enrollment, it further works to insure student participation, engagement, development, retention and graduation success through transitional mentoring and leadership components.

TG’s Board of Directors approved the Award, said Kristin Boyer, Director of Philanthropy.

“TG wholeheartedly supports your efforts and wishes you every success as you prepare to implement this important program…We certainly look forward to working with you to help students and families achieve their educational goals,” Boyer said in written notification of the program’s funding.

Miguel Treviño, TAMIU director of Student Orientation, Leadership and Engagement said the program’s three-year funding has been the outgrowth of a strong working relationship with TG.

“For two years, TG assisted TAMIU in developing a program that has made significant progress in helping students and their parents and family members. TAMIU was able to reach 9,200 individuals through 200 College Apply Days and onsite school visits to each local campus.    Through this TG Award, we’re now building upon that foundation to broaden our program, deploying Student Success Mentors into local community colleges and fine tuning our Freshman Leadership Organization (FLO)."

“Our intent is two-fold: 1: Recruit, hire and train Student Success Mentors to promote higher education (admissions, financial aid, student orientation, and leadership programs) at the partnering high schools and community college to increase the number of new students enrolling at TAMIU and 2: Provide a transition leadership program for 25 first-time Treviño said program partners project directly benefiting approximately 6000 perspective area students and their parents in 2013-2014 alone.

United Independent School District (UISD), the Roman Catholic Diocese of Laredo

Laredo Community College and TAMIU’s Division of Student Success and Office of Grants and Contracts.
