TAMIU Gets “Social” with New Online Directory

Things are really quite social at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU)…social media that is.

The University has seen an explosion of TAMIU-oriented social media launches, so much so that it has made an online click-through directory available on its main web site.

“Get Social,” featured on tamiu.edu, provides a comprehensive guide to all social media at the University, including official and “friends of TAMIU” accounts, which feature many student clubs and organizations.

While the bulk of the University’s social media are Facebook or Twitter enterprises, a full range includes RSS feeds, EventBrite, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest and YouTube efforts.

Melissa Barrientos-Whitfield, the University’s social media and communications manager, said the Get Social directory attests to the power of social media and its ability to bring diverse communities together.

“We have 65 distinct social media presences that attest to some element of TAMIU, its services, its students, special campus interests or initiatives. Our main Facebook account alone is nearing 18,000 ‘Likes.’ Whether large or small presences, each is bringing like-minded communities together and helping to define the TAMIU experience in new and engaging ways,” Barrientos-Whitfield explained.

The University also has a free smartphone and tablet app and a weekly podcast that features University news.  The web-based @TAMIU Calendar offers event reminders and sharing capabilities.

The Fall semester at TAMIU gets underway Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013.
