Three members of the Texas A&M International University chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi received the Love of Learning award worth $500. They are: Maria Del Rosario Benavides, graduate assistant studying sociology; Dr. Anna Cieslicka, associate professor, psychology; and Selma Herrera, graduate student at Texas Christian University.

The awards were given to 147 Phi Kappa Phi members nationwide. Few chapters received two or more awards.

Benavides said she plans to use funds from the award for continuing education.

Dr. Cieslicka said she plans to use funds from the award for conference travel.

Herrera said she plans to use funds from the award for graduate school expenses.

The Phi Kappa Phi Love of Learning Award program was initiated in 2007 to help fund graduate or professional studies, doctoral dissertations, continuing education, career development and travel related to teaching and studies for active Society members. The Society's robust award program grants $1 million each biennium to qualifying students and members through graduate fellowships, undergraduate study abroad grants, member and chapter awards and grants for local and national literacy initiatives.

The TAMIU PKP Chapter 296 was very successful this past year. They were awarded the Chapter of Merit award for Chapter activities in 2011-12.

TAMIU student and PKP member José Jacobo received $1,000 from the PKP Study Abroad Award, a first for the local Chapter.

The TAMIU PKP also established a scholarship in the past year and awarded the first two scholarships of $500 each to Selma Herrera and Gwennie Potzka.

Founded in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Phi Kappa Phi inducts annually approximately 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni. The Society has chapters on more than 300 select colleges and universities in North America and the Philippines. Membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction also qualify.
