Texas A&M International University’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences’ Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing is the nation’s 303rd member of a national team hoping to advance U.S. health through nursing.

As part of the Texas Team of the Campaign for Action, the Canseco School of Nursing joins other educational leaders in a strategic alliance focused on achieving the IOM Future of Nursing recommendations.

TAMIU Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Dr. Glenda Walker, explained IOM and its recommendations.

“In 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a groundbreaking report, ‘The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health,’ which conducted a thorough examination of how nurses’ roles would need to change to better meet the needs of an aging and increasingly diverse population in a highly complex, constantly evolving health system.  Their Report focused on a series of recommendations that support healthcare for all Americans, through enhanced nursing care contributions.

“There are eight recommendations informed by core values of enhanced education and training, full partnership in redesigning health care, improved data and collection and information infrastructure,” Dr. Walker explained.

“As an accredited School of Nursing, we’re keenly interested in making sure that our graduates are not only prepared for nursing today, but more importantly, for nursing tomorrow. Key to the eight recommendations are increasing the proportion of baccalaureate nurses by 80 percent by 2020; ensuring that nurses engage in lifelong learning and nurse residency programs and preparing and engaging nurses in leading changes to advance health,” she noted.

The College of Nursing will now be able to work with other like-minded educators and nurses across the State to advance the IOM Future of Nursing Recommendations through regional events and initiatives.

The College of Nursing offers a RN to BSN completion degree, which is completely online, a BSN degree, a Master of Science for Nurse Practitioners and a Master of Science in Nursing Administration.

TAMIU’s programs are fully accredited by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.
