Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) is part of a new consortia partnership for Texas, Liberal Education and America's Promise (LEAP): Excellence for Everyone as a Nation Goes to College. In addition to TAMIU, the LEAP Texas coalition includes over 60 institutions of higher education in Texas.

The consortium is a national initiative created by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). The LEAP Texas coalition has a common purpose and is committed to the fundamental principle of the LEAP initiative: championing the importance of a 21st century liberal education—for individuals and for a nation dependent on economic creativity and democratic vitality.

Texas institutions face numerous challenges: multiple institutional structures and systems, a diverse and growing student population, growing demands for accountability, a new core curriculum for higher education, and rapidly changing technology and globalization. LEAP Texas sees the opportunity for significant large-scale collaboration to address these challenges.

Texas Commissioner of Higher Education Raymund Paredes said the Board and LEAP Texas efforts are aligned.

“The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and LEAP Texas are aligned in our efforts to identify higher education learning outcomes that not only improve completion and productivity rates within higher education and the workforce, but also enhance and inspire the quality of students’ learning,” Paredes said.

LEAP Texas includes 34 public two-year colleges, 23 universities of varying missions, four research flagships, and a private institution with the capacity to reach almost 900,000 students. Administratively, LEAP Texas is housed at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

(LEAP) is a national advocacy, campus action, and research initiative created by AAC&U.  Founded in 1915, AAC&U is considered the leading national association concerned with the quality, vitality, and public standing of undergraduate liberal education. Members are committed to extending the advantages of a liberal education to all students, regardless of academic specialization or intended career.

AAC&U includes 1,300 member institutions—including accredited public and private colleges, community colleges, research universities, and comprehensive universities of every type and size.
