TAMIU to Host TXNAME Conference April 11-12

Laredo’s Texas A&M International University will host the 13th Annual 2014 Region 6-Texas Chapter of the National Association of Multicultural Education (TXNAME) Conference Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the TAMIU Student Center

The Conference theme is “Border Crossings: ReVisioning Multicultural Education.” 

Dr. Diana Linn, TAMU College of Education associate professor and chair, department of Curriculum and Pedagogy, is President-elect of the Texas chapter, TXNAME.

Dr. Linn said the Texas Chapter of NAME is committed to the development and implementation of NAME goals and objectives:  that all students have full and fair participation in a just society by learning the intrinsic value of their own self-worth and learning to value and respect diversity.

“NAME works to actively to promote the basic tenets of democracy, cultural pluralism and equity for all by educating all stakeholders (educators, students, policy-makers, parents and community members) about the goals and meanings of multicultural education; recruitment of new stakeholders at all levels; implementing instructional strategies and curriculum that encourage equal participation, appreciation of diversity and social action from all students.

“In addition, we advocate the adoption of educational materials that accurately reflect the contributions and perspectives of all members of society and are free from bias, and by engaging each other in on-going professional dialogue,” Dr. Linn explained.

Presenters at the two-day Conference will explore themes including:  multicultural education research, professional development, culturally responsive teaching and best practices, health, human development and sustainable communities and policy and practice.

Keynote speakers include Dr. Mariela Nuñez-Janes, associate professor of Anthropology at University of North Texas  and Dr. Cynthia L.  Bejarano, Regents Professor, New Mexico State University. 

Dr. Nuñez-Janes is co-director of UNT’s Ethnic Studies Program and specializes in race, ethnicity, and education. Her areas of interest also include Latinos, feminist pedagogies, and participatory action research.

Dr. Bejarano is a professor of Criminal Justice at New Mexico State University. Her publications and research interests focus on border violence, immigration issues, and gender violence at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Dr. Catheryn Weitman, Dean of the TAMIU College of Education, said the College is proud to be hosting the gathering.

“We are delighted to hold this conference in Laredo and at TAMIU and are very proud of Dr. Linn for her work with this organization,” Dr. Weitman said.

This is the first time that TAMIU hosts the TXNAME Conference.
