TAMIU 10th Annual International Guitar Concert Friday

The TAMIU Classical Guitar Ensemble will once again fill the Texas A&M International University Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall with international music at the Tenth Annual International Guitar Concert Friday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m.


Admission is free and open to the public.

“The International Guitar Concert was born several years to expose our students to opportunities to perform music and styles from different countries. We are very excited to offer a program with music selections from all over the world,” said Dr. Gilberto D. Soto, professor of Music Education/Guitar and director of the TAMIU Guitar Ensemble.

“This year, the countries selected for this program are Spain, England, México, Ireland and the United States, among others. We are also presenting special guitar arrangements of music from many genres and generations,” Dr. Soto explained.

University students and members of the Ensemble for the 2014 Spring Semester are José Sanchez, Alejandro Peña, Leonel Salinas, Marco López, Patricia Gonzalez, Miguel Ruíz, Roberto Coronado, José Macias, Carlos Limón, Santiago Moreno, Rene Herrera, Marina Garza, Salvador Hernández, Becky Sepúlveda, Ricardo Rodríguez and Johnny Ramírez.

Some of the selections included in the program are “Sleeper’s Awake,” by Johann Sebastian Bach featuring Dr. Colin A. Campbell, assistant professor of Music and special guest artist. From Germany, the ensemble will honor Ludwig Van Beethoven by performing the second movement of his Seventh Symphony. From Spain, the Ensemble will perform a special flamenco guitar arrangement of “Danza Viva.” From England, “Goodbye to Romance” from Randy Rhoades and Ozzie, and “Yellow” by Coldplay. From Ireland, the Ensemble will perform “Oh Danny Boy,” plus a special guitar arrangement of Enrique Iglesias of Spain’s “Loco,” among others.

“The TAMIU Classical Guitar Ensemble is a group of mostly music guitar majors and minors, as well as other instrumentalists who share experience in reading and performing guitar literature for instrumental ensembles. Our Ensemble is a very active guest performer during the school year at special community and University events,” Soto noted.
