Next week, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students will cast their votes for a student-initiated Referendum Funding TAMIU Athletics.  Voting will take place online April 7 - April 9.

Student hearings on the Referendum were scheduled on campus starting Wednesday.  Remaining hearings are Thursday, April 3 at 12:30 p.m. and Monday, April 7 at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Center Rotunda.

The Referendum vote is focused on funding the University’s Dustdevil Athletics program.  SGA members noted that winning Dustdevil Athletics teams have elevated the University’s profile and are helping to secure its place among the State’s top universities.

If passed, the Referendum hopes to more fully fund Dustdevil Athletics.

Specifically, if passed, the Referendum for Funding provides for an increase in the Athletics Fee from $17 a semester credit hour (SCH) to $21.

Previous student-led Referendum efforts have helped the University to expand its Student Center complex twice.

Just last week, the University dedicated a 7400-square foot computer lounge, part of an expansion funded by a Referendum passed in Spring 2012.  That Referendum provided for increased seating in Dusty’s Diner, relocated the student game room to the first floor with a separate entrance and enclosed an existing patio to allow for open air or shaded events.
