Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students who share their time to volunteer for their community may now be rewarded with an award from the United States President.

Recently, TAMIU became an approved, certifying organization that can nominate students and community members for The President’s Volunteer Service Award.

The Award is the premier volunteer awards program encouraging U.S. citizens or lawfully admitted permanent residents of the United States through presidential recognition to live a life of service.

“We were looking at ways to provide TAMIU students who give back to the community extra encouragement to continue to do more and to show our efforts are being recognized,” said Sylvia Hinojosa, TAMIU Community Standards and Student Engagement Coordinator.

The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in their communities and encourage more people to serve, said Hinojosa.

The Council created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.

Any individual, family or group that meets the program’s criteria can receive Presidential recognition for volunteer hours served over a 12-month period or over a course of a lifetime.

Hinojosa said that TAMIU, which has been counting students’ volunteer hours for this Award since April, will hold a ceremony in Spring to recognize its first group of volunteers with a letter, certificate and pin from the U.S. President.

Since 2010, TAMIU students have given over 50,000 service hours, making a lasting difference in the lives of people of all ages in our community, Hinojosa added.

“I think the importance of serving in the community is evident in what students will also gain,” Hinojosa said. “In addition to giving back to the community, they will learn a tremendous amount of leadership skills and abilities that are applicable in the workforce as well as network with potential employers.”
