Freshmen Convocation at TAMIU Friday

An annual tradition that helps to secure the academic connection between new undergraduate students and Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) takes place this Friday, Sept. 5.

Freshmen Convocation, which concludes TAMIU Welcome Week activities, begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall and is coordinated by the Office of Student Affairs.

Associate vice president for Student Affairs, Gerardo Alva, said the event truly signals the start of the first year students’ connection to their University.

“Convocation is one of only two formal occasions where the University President, vice-presidents, academic deans and faculty gather to focus on and celebrate students. It helps our first year students to realize their identity as a class and remind them of the privilege they have to impact the world positively.  Together, in concert with members of the University community, we all commit to the established values of excellence, integrity, service and respect,” Alva explained.

The morning’s program will include a presentation by student participants in last year’s Reading the Globe initiative, which saw 15 students, travel to South Africa. 

In addition, Teacher of the Year Dr. Anna Cieslicka will be recognized and the recipients of the Senator Judith Zaffirini Scholarship and Leadership Awards, Dr. Marcus Ynalvez, associate professor, department of Public Affairs and Social Research and Dr. Ruby Ynalvez, associate professor, department of Biology and Chemistry, will be presented with their Awards.

Jackelyne Briseño, Student Government Association President, will also provide greetings and remarks.
