TAMIU PKP Honor Society Chapter 296 Wins National Recognition

Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Chapter 296 of Phi Kappa Phi (PKP), the national all discipline honor society for upper-division undergraduate and graduate students, has earned national recognitions.

The Chapter was awarded the Chapter of Merit Award, presented to TAMIU Chapter president and TAMIU associate professor Dr. James A. Norris at the recent Biennial National Convention in St. Louis, Mo.

TAMIU graduate student, PKP member and student vice president Maria del Rosario Benavides was awarded a Phi Kappa Phi “Love of Learning”  $500 grant, one of only 80 awarded nationally this Fall.  Only 10 percent of applicants for the grant win funding. 

TAMIU charter Chapter member Dr. Judith Zaffirini, State Senator, was featured in the PKP Member Spotlight of the quarterly journal, Phi Kappa Phi Forum. The column recognized Dr. Zaffirini’s service to Texas, the Texas State Senate, and Texas higher education.

Chapter president Dr. Norris said the recognitions are a salute to the Chapter’s commitment.

“These awards recognize the hard work and dedication of the Chapter officers and student officers throughout the previous academic year.  We are proud to represent our Chapter and to support our national honor society’s motto: ‘Let the love of learning rule humanity,’ ” he  said.

This is the third year in a row that the TAMIU Chapter has been recognized.  In 2012 the Chapter also won a Chapter of Merit Award. In 2013, the Chapter won the Chapter of Excellence Award. 

Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. It has chapters on more than 300 select colleges and universities in North America and the Philippines.
