Women interested in learning basic self-defense techniques are invited to participate in R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) classes offered through Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Office of Continuing Education and University Police Department.

The women-only classes, open to all women in the community, consist of a 12-hour program taught by nationally certified R.A.D. instructors. Course fee is $25.

To view four-day R.A.D. classes offered at TAMIU in November, December, February and April and register, visit www.tamiu.edu/ce

Session 1 will be offered Nov. 4, 6, 11 and 13 (Tuesdays and Thursdays); Session 2 on Dec. 8, 10, 15 and 17 (Mondays and Wednesdays); Session 3 on Feb. 7, 14, 21, and 28 (Saturdays); and Session 4 on April 14, 16, 21, and 23 (Tuesdays and Thursdays).

Kimberly Martin del Campo, TAMIU’s director of Continuing Education, said that according to the American Medical Association, nationally, one out of every four college-age women is a victim of rape.

R.A.D. class participants can work at their own pace and don’t need to be athletes, Martin Del Campo explained.

Participants should be at least 13 years of age. Those under the age of 18, however, must be accompanied by a female family member.

For more information, please contact Martin del Campo at 326.3068, e-mail ce@tamiu.edu or visit offices located in Student Center 118.

University office hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
