Learn about how deportation has worked and still operates in the “nation of immigrants” at the next installment of the Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) International Bank of Commerce 2014-2015 Keynote Speaker Series Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the TAMIU Student Center Ballroom.

Admission is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the TAMIU A.R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business’ Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade.

Translation services, from English to Spanish, will be available.

Keynote Speaker Dr. Daniel Kanstroom, professor of law, Boston College Law School, will present “Aftermath: Deportation Law and the New American Diaspora,” based on his book by the same name.

Dr. Kanstroom’s lecture addresses a wide range of historical, political, social, and legal issues, and considers whether the deportation system works in any meaningful sense. It also describes deportation’s aftermath: actual effects on individuals, families, U.S. communities, and the countries that must process and repatriate ever-increasing numbers of U.S. deportees.

Kanstroom teaches immigration and refugee law, international human rights law and administrative law. He is the director of the International Human Rights Program and founded the Post-Deportation Human Rights Project. He founded the Boston College Immigration and Asylum clinic in which students represent indigent migrants and asylum seekers.

He has published widely in the fields of U.S. immigration law, human rights, criminal law, and European citizenship and asylum law and has lectured on immigration and human rights issues around the world. Kanstroom has also trained hundreds of judges and lawyers on U.S. immigration law, published op-eds in several newspapers, and been featured on ABC News, National Public Radio, and Court TV, among several other media appearances.

This Speaker Series presents practical and targeted lectures imparted by distinguished leaders, recognized experts and outstanding scholars in the trade and business arenas.

It brings to the University individuals of exceptional accomplishment and expertise to enhance the academic experience of TAMIU students, faculty and the community.
