For the first time in its history, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll which recognizes the important role universities play in solving community problems through meaningful and measureable student civic engagement in the community.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) announced the 2014 Awards for National and Community Service. TAMIU was named to the Honor Roll with Distinction for its General Community Service engagement. The President's Honor Roll also recognizes higher education institutions in three additional categories: Economic Opportunity, Education and Interfaith Community.

CNCS CEO Wendy Spencer said she considers Honor Roll schools to be inspirational.

“Service and higher education go hand in hand. These schools are inspiring young leaders to roll up their sleeves and work alongside community members to solve problems. By recognizing the institutions that are leading the way to achieve meaningful, measurable results for the communities they serve, we also highlight the vital role all colleges and universities play in addressing community challenges and placing more students on a lifelong path of civic engagement,” Spencer said.

Mayra Hernández, TAMIU director of the Office of Student Conduct and Community engagement concurred.

“Our students’ dedication to community service made this historic award possible.  Through countless acts of selfless volunteer service, they are making a difference in our community. We have utmost confidence that as future graduates they will continue their service commitment and advance their community engagement further still,” Hernandez said.

In October TAMIU signed a first-ever Memorandum of Agreement establishing service opportunities aiding local agencies by enhancing student learning and development with partner non-profit organizations. Since 2010, over 1,300 TAMIU students have contributed over 56,000 service hours, with a monetary impact of over $1.2 million.

Also this year, TAMIU became an approved, certifying organization that can nominate students and community members for The President’s Volunteer Service Award.

The TAMIU students join the ranks of 3.1 million students nationwide who have contributed 118 million hours of community service at an approximate value of $2.5 billion.

CNCS is a federal agency that helps more than 5 million Americans improve the lives of their fellow citizens through service. Working hand in hand with local partners, it taps into the ingenuity and can-do spirit of the American people to tackle some of the nation’s most pressing challenges.

It invests in thousands of nonprofit and faith-based groups that are making a difference across the country. Among its groups are the AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, the Social Innovation Fund and the Volunteer Generation Fund.

The Spring Semester 2015 at TAMIU begins Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015.
