In an effort to promote the internationalization of the newly launched Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) MA in Communication students, the “Media, Culture and Identity in the U.S.-México Border” class is sharing its lessons via videoconference with 14 graduate students and four doctoral students of the prestigious Universidad Iberoamericana-Santa Fé in Mexico City (UIA).

TAMIU’s new MA degree in Communication is focused on the study and research of media on the U.S.-México border and Latin America, acknowledging the University’s geographical location and the expertise of its faculty in both hemispheric regions.

Dr. José Carlos Lozano, TAMIU faculty member, and Dr. Maricela Portillo, director of UIA’s Ph.D. in Communication program offer the class simultaneously so that students can interact with one another, sharing experiences and opinions about culture, identity and media of the border region.

The first session took place on Tuesday, Jan. 20 with an excellent interaction between students of both institutions.  Late registration at TAMIU ends Monday Jan. 26.

The course covers relevant topics related to media, culture and identity on the border. Students at TAMIU and UIA will conduct joint research projects on the coverage of border issues by Mexican and U.S. newspapers, radio, television and cinema.

The class is presented under the “Border and Latin American Media Studies” concentration of the graduate Communication program. Two additional classes offered this semester are the  "Theory of Communication" and "Organizational Communication.”

Dr. Lozano, also the Director of the Department of Communication and Psychology, said activities of this type ensure that students graduate with a broad experience and a truly international vision.
