Texas A&M International University students (TAMIU) raised over $3,000 for Special Olympics Texas in last month’s “Polar Plunge, and earned three trophies.

Over 60 students and five faculty members joined in the challenge at the City of Laredo Parks & Leisure Inner City Pool.  The event benefits the athletes and programs of Special Olympics Texas.

The students were awarded trophies for most money raised by a group, best group costume and best individual costume.

TAMIU College of Education professor Randel Brown leads the annual charge for the event and joined the students in the Plunge.  He said he is always thankful to the participants who take the Plunge.

“This year was actually pretty chilly, so we had some hearty souls suiting up to make the Plunge.  I’m very grateful for their commitment and for their support of this organization. We’re already looking forward to next year’s Challenge,” Dr. Brown said.

Last year, TAMIU was selected for the Outstanding Service Award from a Civic or Service Organization for South Texas and was recognized at a Banquet in College Station.

Over the last 17 years, the University has provided numerous volunteers and fundraising support for SOTX in the Laredo area. TAMIU professors encourage students to give back to the athletes in the community by embracing their talents and showing support through volunteer hours.

SOTX is a privately funded, non-profit organization that changes lives through the power of sport by encouraging and empowering people with intellectual disabilities, promoting acceptance for all, and fostering communities of understanding and respect.
