One of México’s most revered mariachi groups, the Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán de Guadalajara, will perform in Laredo Wednesday, April 15 at 7 p.m. at the Laredo Civic Center as part of a scholarship benefit for Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students.

Concert tickets are now available for $35 and $25 and are available by calling 956.326.2273. They will also be available for sale at the Civic Center on Wednesday, concert day, at 4 p.m.

The concert, "México, Voz Que Canta," is part of the University’s first Artist in Residence program; a collaboration with Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán launched last October. It is the culmination of the three -day First Annual International Mariachi Workshop, which is drawing mariachi music students from local and surrounding areas.

The students attend workshops conducted by the Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán’s musical director, Fernando Martínez and the entire Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán.  They will be involved in sectional and private lessons, group critiques, a meet and greet, and special scholarship opportunities.

Students will have an opportunity to be part of the special April 15 performance and concert with Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán and the TAMIU Mariachi Internacional.

As part of the University's Artist in Residence Program, Mariachi Tecalitlán provides for an array of mariachi music learning and outreach activities at the University and in the community.

Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán was founded in 1965 by brothers Pepe Martínez Barajas and Fernando Martínez Barajas, carrying out tours around Latin America and the U.S. A second generation of musicians joined the 12-piece traditional Mexican group during the 1980s and 1990s, Fernando Martínez, Jr. and Carlos Martínez among them. In 1997, Fernando Martínez Barajas' son, Angel Martínez Arreguin, became Tecalitlán's  leading member.
