A special advance screening of the documentary “El Poeta,” about Mexican poet Javier Sicilia, will be shown Thursday, April 16 at 3 p.m. at Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Theatre, room 106.

The screening is free of charge, open to the public and sponsored by the University’s Writing Center and KLRN.

It is part of that day’s celebration of the special collaboration between TAMIU and KLRN, the Public Television Station for South Texas, focused on the opening of the TAMIU KLRN Studio on campus. Arthur Rojas Emerson, KLRN president and CEO, will introduce the documentary.  A discussion will follow.

“El Poeta” tells the story of renowned Mexican poet Javier Sicilia who ignited mass protests and an ongoing movement for peace after the brutal murder of his 24-year-old son Juan Francisco.  PBS will premiere the documentary nationwide in May as part of Latino Public Broadcasting’s arts and culture strand, “Voces.”

The documentary follows Sicilia as he travels across the U.S. to call attention to the impact of the increasingly militarized U.S. “war on drugs.” From Loteria Films’ Kelly Duane de la Vega and Katie Galloway, it highlights Sicilia’s efforts to create an international peace movement about the lives lost in the drug war.

Filmed over three years, it trails Sicilia’s “Caravan for Peace with Justice and Dignity” through the Mexican cities of Juarez, Chihuahua, and Durango, and his subsequent travels across the U.S.
