A jazz festival and band and percussion concert are part of Spring music events featured at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU).

The TAMIU Jazz Fest will be Wednesday, April 22 at 5:30 p.m. while the TAMIU Spring Band/Percussion Concert will be Wednesday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m. Both events, free and open to the public, will be at the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Bands from five local high schools will perform at the Jazz Fest, with each band playing for 30 minutes and receiving written comments from TAMIU music faculty. A final performance by the TAMIU Jazz Band will take place after the high school band presentations.

The TAMIU Spring Band/Percussion Concert will feature the TAMIU Percussion Ensemble and Symphonic Band, directed by Dr. James Moyer, assistant professor of music.

The first half part of the event will feature the TAMIU Percussion Ensemble, a group of 13 music majors and minors who study percussion as their major instrument, said Dr. Moyer.

“Several students will be featured soloists at the concert,” Moyer said, “Music styles will range from ragtime to contemporary. The stage will be filled with drums, marimbas, xylophones, bells, cymbals and many other percussion instruments.”

Moyer explained that the band part of the program is a first at TAMIU. This year, band students from both TAMIU and Laredo Community College are joining together in a performance, he added.

“Dr. William Osinski, music faculty member at LCC, works with his students on the concert music for the first half of the semester,” Moyer said, “After Spring Break, the LCC students join the TAMIU students in one band, bringing our total to 60.”

The joint concert will feature popular band music of C. E. Duble, Floyd Werle, Clifton Williams and Dmitri Shostakovich, Moyer said. A brass trio will be featured with the band including Daniel Garcia on trumpet, Leo Galván on trombone and John Riemund on tuba, he added.
