TAMIU Librarian Nerissa Lindsey Presents on Metadata Skills at Conference

The essential skills and qualities needed for cataloging librarians in the digital age will be the subject of a panel presentation at the Texas Library Association’s April conference in Austin by Texas A&M International University  (TAMIU) catalog librarian Nerissa S. Lindsey.

Over 7000 conference goers are expected to explore modern trends in the library profession with special insight and best practices from library professionals. The conference theme is “Sync Up: Imagine, Collaborate, Innovate.”

Lindsey’s panel presentation will focus on Cloud-based library management systems.

“I’ll be discussing Cloud-based library management systems and how they impact the workflows of technical services, what skills/qualities cataloging/metadata librarians need to handle these changes, and the benefits of doing so,” Lindsey said.

Last August, the Killam Library transitioned to the Cloud, becoming the first In Laredo to do so and only the second Texas A&M University System campus to be at the forefront of fast-developing library digital service standards.

The “Cloud” is the term given to a type of computing that relies on sharing computing resources rather than having local servers or personal computers handle applications.  These applications exist off site in the so-called Cloud and are delivered to the end user through the Internet.

Lindsey said she is honored to be selected to represent the Killam Library.

“Being invited to speak on a panel at a regional conference about modern trends in the profession shows that we have invested in technology at the Killam Library, and that development is being acknowledged by our peers. This technology is not only letting us get library resources into the hands of faculty and students quicker than before, but also allows us to provide public services that the older technology tied to a desktop computer could not,” she observed. 

Lindsey joined the University about five years ago.  She holds her undergraduate degree in anthropology from the University of California-Davis and her graduate degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Washington.
