Over 100 local high school students who recently participated in Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) ‘Reach Higher’ College Commitment Signing Day signed a commitment certificate promising to not only complete high school but to continue on to earn a higher education degree.

The event, held at TAMIU’s Student Center, was designed for students participating in the University’s Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP) and GEAR UP IV. More than 200 students, parents, and family members attended.

Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, MSEIP and GEAR UP IV students take part in programs that provide tuition-free classes including materials and meals, support and field experiences.

The event affirms the students’ commitment and TAMIU’s commitment to help ensure the soon to be high school grads receive the support they need to complete their higher education dreams, said Mary Susan Foster, MSEIP program director.

Program students come from both Laredo Independent School District and United ISD and are entering their junior year of high school study.

The program will run until July 2017, Foster said.

“Participating students will continue until they graduate from high school and we see them enter a post-secondary institution,” she said.

Research shows that individuals entering Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields have tremendous career and employment opportunities available to them, with premium salaries and benefits to those holding degrees in these fields.
