TAMIU Alumni Recognized by The Huffington Post’s ‘40 under 40’: Latinos in American Politics

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students and alumni   continue to make strides in several fields and their contributions are being recognized. Two TAMIU graduates were named to The Huffington Post “Latino Voice” Blog “40 Under 40: Latinos in American Politics.”

The list is a compellation of fast rising Latinos under 40 years of age to watch in the upcoming election cycle. The list was compiled by a committee of peers.

Carlos Sánchez, received his TAMIU bachelor’s degree in political science in 2004. Sanchez was a longtime staffer to House Minority Leader and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California before U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio, picked Sánchez as his chief of staff.

Sánchez was rated No. 7 on the list.

At No. 21 is Jorge Aguilar, who also received his bachelor’s degree in political science in 2011. He started working in public service in Laredo and now  works as deputy press secretary and director of Hispanic media for Rep. Pelosi.  He accompanied the minority leader and several other members of Congress to Cuba during the first official House of Representatives delegation trip.

The political science program is housed in the TAMIU College of Arts and Sciences Department of Social Sciences and offers both a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master of Arts in History and Political Thought with a Political Science concentration. Department faculty have a wide range of teaching and research interests and routinely apply their research expertise to a broad range of local, state, and national and international issues and emerging challenges.
