The seminar, entitled, “Plural Writings: Theory and Praxis of a Short Novel,” will delve into the study of Spanish American short novels or nouvelles. It will be conducted in Spanish and draw both scholars and students from, Paris-Sorbonne University, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), and Texas A&M International University. TAMIU President Dr. Ray Keck will welcome participants during the first session.

The first installment of the seminar will be Friday, May 6. Other dates include Friday, June 3 at 11 a.m. and Friday, June 24 at 11 a.m. All sessions will take place in Western Hemispheric Trade Center, room 224.

The series is free and open to professors, University seniors, graduate students of Spanish and to those interested in this topic.

Dr. José Cardona-López, TAMIU professor of Spanish and Spanish American Literature, will spearhead the transmission from TAMIU. His colleagues and co-organizers from Paris and México City will join in virtually.

“There is a lot of interest at this moment in the study of short novels or nouvelles, as it is known in French language,” Dr. Cardona-López said, “I’ve attended international conferences on the topic in México and shared with colleagues from Hungary, France, Spain and many countries in Latin America and think that this kind of a seminar is extremely important for our colleagues and students who will get to interact with their counterparts in other countries.”

Some sessions in the seminar will include an introduction of a keynote presenter and presentation of academic papers on the study of short novels, Dr. Cardona-López said.

“The idea is for our students to have an opportunity to be exposed to international academic seminars such as these. We are thrilled to be able to host an event of this magnitude without the need for our students and those in the public who are interested in this topic to leave Laredo.  Our students and the public can participate and attend the seminar from a room at TAMIU, ” Cardona-López concluded.
