TAMIU Sets Ribbon-Cutting Feb. 13 for Expansion of Kinesiology, Wellness and Recreational Center

Things are growing at the Rec Center...by 14,000 square feet!

On Monday, February 13, students at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) will be able to put their best “fit” forward at ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the expansion of the Kinesiology, Wellness and Recreational Center at 11 a.m.

Known as the “Rec,” the facility is one of TAMIU’s most popular destinations. The 14,000 square foot expansion includes new activity rooms, a weight training room and expanded cardio areas.

The increased size makes expanded class offerings and reduction of wait times for specialty equipment possible.  Funding for the expansion came from student fees approved by student referendum.

TAMIU Recreational Sports director Robert Garza says students are already taking advantage of increased fitness options.

“Academics can be very stressful," Garza said, "Some students have multiple jobs, and coming in to be able to relieve some of that stress in here, while meeting new people -- that's extremely crucial for our students to be successful. Students get a chance to do a more intense workout and have space to do personal workouts…  ab exercises, back exercises…the expansion has allowed us to do multiple things with what we have right now."

TAMIU Rec Sports coordinates the University’s growing intramural and recreational offerings and provides programs, facilities and services to enhance the quality of life and educational experiences for both the diverse University and local community.

Student participation in Rec Sports programming is closely aligned with the University’s core values of respect, integrity, service and excellence. Last year, the Rec Center hosted some 101,000 visits and was home to 311 Rec Sports Intramural Teams.

Project architects were Frank Architects.  Project managers were SSC Services for Education and general contractor the Marshall Company.
