Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) ranks No. 3 among the 10 Best Colleges for Mathematics Majors in Texas, according to a new ranking announced by online source, Zippia.com.

TAMIU follows Rice University and The University of Texas at Austin as one of the top Universities for Math majors in the state. TAMIU outranks Texas Christian University, Southern Methodist University, Texas A&M University-College Station, Texas Tech University, Austin College, University of Houston and St. Mary’s University.

To arrive at its rankings, Zippia says it considered data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and College Scorecard data from Ed.gov to understand which Mathematics departments offer the best career opportunities.

One of the factors that weighed in included career results such as mean earnings after six and 10 years, as well as the ratio of people working to not working after 10 years.

Mathematics emphasis, such as the percentage of graduating class that are mathematics majors (larger the better), also played a role in the rankings.

Zippia also reviewed school performance including admissions rate (more selective the better), graduation rate, average cost of attendance (lower is better) and medium amount of debt.

Dr. Rohitha Goonatilake, TAMIU professor of Mathematics and Department of Mathematics and Physics Chair, said there has never been a more exciting time than to be a Mathematics major at TAMIU.

“Mathematics has applications in almost all subjects and the needs of pure and applied mathematics are in high demand,” Dr. Goonatilake said.

TAMIU offers quality undergraduate and graduate degrees in Mathematics. Programs lead to a promising future in careers ranging from those that require a solid background in quantitative analysis to those in research and academia, as well as those in teaching at various levels, Goonatilake explained.

TAMIU’s Department of Mathematics and Physics offers a variety of scholarships to qualified students who wish to pursue careers in STEM field as well as teaching Mathematics, Goonatilake said.

“Our graduates continue to dominate the workforce in the Laredo and surrounding areas which include Laredo Community College and two school districts, Laredo Independent School District (LISD) and United Independent School District (UISD),” he said, “This Fall, there was a 120% increase of graduate enrollment in all M.S. in Mathematics Degree program tracks. This has definitely contributed to the growth and visibility of both our undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Mathematics.”
