TAMIU Pre-Dental Students Awarded Scholarships by Laredo District Dental Society

Three Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Pre-Dental Students are the fortunate beneficiaries of scholarships awarded by the Laredo District Dental Society, District 23, in ceremonies held March 5, 2018 at Tony Roma’s Restaurant.

The three TAMIU Pre-Dental Students:  Ana Laura Gomez-Vasquez, Laura Lomeli and Alyson Miller, will each receive $750 scholarships. All three have been accepted into Dental School and begin their studies Fall 2018.

Gomez-Vasquez will attend The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Dentistry.  Lomeli will enroll at the Texas A&M University School of Dentistry and Miller will attend The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Dentistry.

 Dr. Alessandro Vallone, president of the Laredo District Dental Society, said the Society’s scholarship program is focused on helping students achieve their degree and perhaps return as Laredo District dentists.

“We understand the process of obtaining a DDS degree can be a challenging, expensive, and long one. Our goal is to plant a seed by helping our local Pre-Dental students achieve that Dental degree with initial financial aid assistance via these scholarships, and perhaps one day having these future Dentists return to their roots and communities here in South Texas to provide an invaluable health service to an underserved area,” Dr. Vallone said.

The group plans to make this an annual award.

 Laredo District Dental Society Scholarship Committee members include Vallone, Dr. Christian Cabello and Dr. Claudia Cavazos. Formed in 1972, its membership is drawn from Dimmit, La Salle and Webb counties and has 70 members.
