TAMIU Graduate Nurses Earn 100% Passing Rate for Third Year

Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) College of Nursing and Health Science, Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing Class of 2017 recipients of the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) graduate degree posted a 100% passing rate on their first attempt on Board Exams from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB). 

This is the third consecutive year that TAMIU FNP graduates score 100% success on their Board Exams on first attempt. 

TAMIU College of Nursing and Health Sciences Dean, Dr. Glenda Walker, said the feat underscores the graduates’ commitment and preparation. 

 “We applaud these FNP graduates and our faculty are thrilled to have partnered with them on their successful journey.  They are academically and clinically prepared to take on the role of family nurse practitioners, and provide a standard of excellence in care for all,” Dr. Walker said. 

Nurses with graduate degrees as a Family Nurse Practitioner are able to assess, diagnose, and manage clients across the lifespan, in collaboration with other health care professionals.  

“The future of health care will focus on disease prevention, and chronic disease management.  Our advanced practice graduate nurses have the knowledge and skills to advance the profession and improve access to health care for the citizens of Laredo,” Walker noted.

The TAMIU graduates securing the 100% pass rate are Ana Cantú, Alex Cavazos, Kurt Cuellar, Chantilly Mae Demasiado, Jesús Jimenez Sanchez, Eunyoung Lee, Mario Ramírez, Miranda Ramírez, Ricardo Rodríguez and María Vinegar.

Canseco School of Nursing assistant professor and director of Graduate Programs, Dr. Marivic Torregosa, said a number of factors contributed to the students’ success.

“We attribute our success to the motivation and persistence of our students to achieve academic excellence, and the high academic standards set by our FNP faculty. Because our classes are small, we have close faculty-student face-to-face interactions that may be limited in larger FNP programs, many of which are offered online.

“In addition, our students receive great support and mentorship from preceptors from our local community, providing hands-on clinical experiences, and clinical insight regarding the family nursing practice role. This level of success requires rigorous academic standards, and is best delivered in a classroom setting that ensures collaboration,” Dr. Torregosa said.

The Canseco School of Nursing offers a Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner program (MSN-FNP) and a Master of Science in Nursing Administration (MSN-NADM) focused on the critical role of Nursing in Health Care Management. It also offers a Baccalaureate program. 

TAMIU’s graduate programs are fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. The School also offers a three-year part-time option for those students who must work full-time while attending school.  Graduates must pass their national Certification Board exam.

The Canseco School has also recently announced a partnership with The University of Texas Health Science Center, now called UT Health San Antonio, to offer a new certificate nursing program that can begin to address the severe shortage of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners in South Texas.

The Canseco School has been nationally ranked as one of the best in the Central US by Nurse Journal ORG.
