The Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Classical Guitar Ensemble will feature international music at its 14thAnnual International Guitar Concert Tuesday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m., at the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

“The International Guitar Concert was born several years with an objective of exposing our students to opportunities to perform music and styles from different countries, as well as different periods and styles, and we are very excited to have a  global music program premiered,” said Dr. Gilberto D. Soto, professor of Music Education/Guitar and director of the TAMIU Guitar Ensemble.

The May 1 concert will feature special guests, Dr. Soto noted.

“This year, our special guests will be Dr. Colin Campbell, assistant professor of Music, performing on the Sharkey Corrigan Organ, and percussion major student Kevin González, winner of the 2018 Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra Concerto Competition. We are very honored and excited to have both as our guests,” Soto said.

University students and members of the Guitar Ensemble for the 2018 spring semester include Francisco Pedraza, Rene Herrera, JoséLuis Macias, Juan Ramírez, Jr., Oscar Ortegón, Orlando Reyes, Esteban D. Espinosa, Joceline Mireles, Sarah Romero Chong, Norberto Ortiz, Alice Almanza, Kassandra N. López, Lily M. Saenz, Israel Cruz, Humberto Garza, Joanna C. Gunnoe and Deborah Gavilanes.

Some program selections include the famous “Guitar Concerto in D Major” by Antonio Vivaldi, “In the Mood” by Glenn Miller, “Recuerdos de la Alhambra” by Francesco Tarrega Sevilla, “Three Women Walking” by Ottmar Liebert, plus unique guitar ensemble arrangements of popular selections,  “Asi Fue” by Juan Gabriel, and “Casate Conmigo,” by the popular singer Nicky Jam, among others.

“The TAMIU Classical Guitar Ensemble is a group of mostly music guitar majors and minors, as well as other instrumentalists who share experience in reading and performing guitar literature for instrumental ensembles. Our Ensemble is a very active guest performer during the school year at special community and University events, and next summer some of the Ensemble members will perform for the fourth time at the International Chamber Music Festival in the cities of Madrid and Barajas in Spain,” Soto concluded.
