A 5K and 10K race taking place in Nuevo Laredo, México Sunday, May 6 at 7 a.m. in Parque Viveros will benefit a Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) scholarship program designed to assist Mexican students at the University.

The “Carrera Del 80” Race benefits the TAMIU Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior (IME) IME-Beca Scholarship Program, which provides financial support for Mexican students attending TAMIU, said Athena Cortez, TAMIU Office of Institutional Advancement development officer.

The IME-Becas Program, which helps to underscore TAMIU’s international mission, has been providing needed scholarship support to TAMIU students since 2010.

The Mexican government created the program in 2005 as a means to endorse academic development for Mexican immigrants living in the United States and it is administered by the Consulate General of México in Laredo.

Carrera Del 80 Race awards range from $300 pesos to $10,000 pesos.
