Over 360 students will present their research and scholarship on a broad range of academic disciplines at Texas A&M International University's (TAMIU) premier annual academic conference, the Lamar Bruni Vergara Academic Conference, Wednesday and Thursday, April 25-26.

Featuring some 221 presentations, the Lamar Bruni Vergara Academic Conference provides TAMIU students and  Laredo Community College students  with an opportunity to present academic research or full-fledged original scholarship, art and performances for judging and recognition. Undergraduates and graduate students vie for awards for best presentations in their disciplines.

TAMIU provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, Dr. Tom Mitchell, said the Conference underscores the University’s commitment to core elements of its mission.

“This Conference is an outstanding example of TAMIU’s continued commitment to developing rich educational and research opportunities for students and faculty as we continue our journey to become a premier international teaching/research institution. Our students are known for their intellectual curiosity and academic acumen, and  regularly excel and distinguish  themselves as being among some of the strongest academically prepared students in The Texas A&M University System,” Dr. Mitchell said.

Dr. John Kilburn, TAMIU associate vice president of  the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects and Conference organizer, said the Conference, now in its 10th year of offering, is made possible by the trustees of the Lamar Bruni Vergara Trust.

“Trustees J.C. Martin III and James H. Pearl fund this important research conference and the University greatly appreciates their continuous support and partnership in fostering the intellectual and professional development of our student researchers,” Dr. Kilburn said.

He said many TAMIU students have expanded on their Conference experience and subsequently published their work in academic journals, or presented at regional, national and international professional conferences, including The Texas A&M University System Pathways Student Research Symposium.

Kilburn noted that the Conference organizers are happy to welcome 20 LCC students to the Conference.

“We’re delighted to have their participation and provide them with an opportunity  to have their research recognized, and to help nurture our next generation of  leaders and scholars,” he concluded.

The Lamar Bruni Vergara Academic Conference will take place across campus and will conclude with a Banquet and  Awards Ceremony and presentation of  prize winners  on Thursday evening.
