TAMIU Hosts 22nd Annual Western Hemispheric Trade Conference This Week

Business leaders, experts, academics and students will converge to explore various perspectives on international business and economics during the 22nd Annual Western Hemispheric Trade Conference at Texas A&M International University Wednesday-Friday, April 11-13.

The Conference is co-sponsored by the TAMIU A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade, in partnership with the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas Facultad de Comercio, Administración y Ciencias Sociales.

The Conference kicks off Wednesday, April 11 from 7:30 - 9 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom with the IBC Keynote Speaker Series presentation, “What is Government Doing about Inequality since the 1970s?,” featuring  Dr. Peter H. Lindert, Distinguished Professor of Economics, University of California, Davis. The presentation is free and open to the public. A reception will follow at 7 p.m.

Dr. Stephen Meardon, director of the TAMIU Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade and associate professor of Economics, said the Western Hemispheric Trade Conference is a venue for international scholarly communication on topical questions in economics and business.

“It brings together scholars from TAMIU, our main partner institution across the border, the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas, and many others from Texas, México, and beyond,” he said, “The Conference features several keynote speakers of international reputation, sponsored generously by our patrons in the Laredo banking, finance, wealth management, and property development industries.”

Dr. Meardon said this year’s speakers will explore from various perspectives questions of international trade and income inequalities both within and between countries.

“Attendees will have the benefit of hearing from world-renowned experts on the theme, and joining TAMIU in contributing to its investigation,” he said.

Free and open to the public is a panel presentation entitled, “Inequality in International Trade,” featuring Dr. Hans-Michael Trautwein, professor of International Economics, Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Germany, among others.  The panel discussion is Thursday, April 12 from 2 - 3:15 p.m. in the Student Center, room 236.

Also free and open to the public is the BBVA Compass Chair Presentation, “Privatization in Developing Countries,” featuring Dr. George Clarke, BBVA Compass Group Distinguished Associate Professor of Economics at TAMIU. His presentation is Friday, April 13 from 10:30 - 11:15 a.m. in the Student Center, room 236.

Conference highlights include: a luncheon keynote address on Thursday, April 12 at noon in the Student Center Ballroom by Chile’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador María del Carmen Domínguez.  Another luncheon keynote address, entitled, “México between Elections and Uncertainty,” by Dr. Luis Rubio, chairman, Mexican Council on Foreign Relations, is Friday, April 13 at 1 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.  Closing remarks and announcement of the Best Student Paper Awards also takes place Friday in the Student Center, room 236
