Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU)  University College Writing Center’s tutor training program has recently been re-certified through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) as a Level III (Master Tutor) program, the organization’s highest-level certification.

TAMIU’s Writing Center received CRLA’s International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC)  initially in 2009, and has completed two separate re-certification reviews in 2013 and 2018.

Writing Center director Jonathan Martínez said the recertification affirms the Center’s high-caliber of services to students.

“The CRLA recertification affirms that the full spectrum of services we offer to TAMIU students meet a rigid, international standard, and ensures that those who seek our services will always benefit from the guidance and support of our campus’ best and brightest tutors,”  Martínez said.

According to the CRLA website, its ITTPC certification process establishes an “internationally accepted standard of skills and training for tutors” by establishing specific standards and outcomes that help programs identify the “knowledge and skills tutors should acquire in their training and preparation.”

CRLA’s ITTPC, established in 1989, has been endorsed by various national organizations, including the National Association for Developmental Education, the Association for the Tutoring Profession, and the Association of Colleges for Tutoring and Learning Assistance. CRLA is member of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education.

TAMIU’s Writing Center helps all undergraduate and graduate students to develop into more confident, effective, and independent writers and learners. It does so by providing free individual and small-group tutoring sessions, online assistance, peer review/writing sessions, and writing workshops to TAMIU students.
