CBP, TAMIU Announce CBP Officer Student Trainee Internship Program Launch in Laredo

Management from U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Laredo Field Office, together with Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) President Dr. Pablo Arenaz today announced the launch of a CBP Officer Student Trainee Internship Program in Laredo. Interns who successfully meet and complete all program and hiring requirements can be converted to CBP officers at the conclusion of the program.

“We are extremely excited about getting this CBP Officer Student Trainee Internship Program, the first of its kind in our area, off the ground,” said Director, Field Operations David P. Higgerson, Laredo Field Office. “We welcome the partnership opportunity with TAMIU for this program and a four-year education plus the internship yields a well-rounded and top notch CBP officer for us at the end of the program.”

TAMIU President Dr. Pablo Arenaz thanked the CBP for its partnership in establishing this internship program.

"We would like to thank the CBP for their partnership and support as we establish this internship program," he said, "This new opportunity will allow our students to be able to develop their marketable skills and gain invaluable experience towards a fulfilling career in the federal government."

Cassandra Wheeler, TAMIU Career Services director, said TAMIU looks forward to students applying for the internship.

"The CBP Officer Student Trainee Internship is a wonderful opportunity for our students to start their career with CBP," she said, "With 44 available internships, TAMIU is delighted that our students are provided with six local internships."

A total of six interns will be accepted into the CBP Officer Student Trainee Internship Program in Laredo. A webinar will be held between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Sept. 25 and the applications for this paid internship program will be accepted beginning after midnight. Interns accepted through the Pathways CBPO Officer Student Trainee Internship Program must pass a drug test, a background investigation, maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average in their undergraduate degree program, complete 640 hours of work experience and meet all program and CBP officer hiring requirements. At the completion of the internship and conversion paperwork within nine months of graduation and successful completion of all the pre-employment requirements, the intern is converted to a CBP officer position and is scheduled to attend the CBP Academy. Upon successful completion of the CBP Academy, the graduate becomes a CBP officer.
