In advance of Spring Break week, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) will celebrate its annual Spring Break Revolution Monday-Thursday, March 4-7.

TAMIU Spring Break Revolution is a series of events held annually and hosted by the TAMIU Office of Student Conduct and Community Engagement, in partnership with various University divisions and departments.

It is designed to promote a safe and healthy Spring Break by simulating environments that students may encounter while on Spring Break and the consequences of high-risk behavior, said Priscilla Martínez, TAMIU outreach coordinator of Student Conduct and Community Engagement.

One of the featured events this year will be a presentation by Tyson Dever, sponsored by U in the Driver Seat, a Texas non-profit organization, on Tuesday, March 5 from 6-7 p.m. in the Student Center Room 226. Dever is a teacher, coach, speaker, and motivator and will share a powerful and inspirational story that will leave students challenged, motivated and ready to dream big, Martínez said.

Months before his 22nd birthday, Dever was waiting to turn left onto a residential road when a fully-loaded cement mixer, driven by a distracted driver, changed his life forever. The wreck would leave him paralyzed from the waist down, his website states.

After shocking his medical team with his progress, Dever was back at school within months, finishing his degree at Texas State University. From there, he went on to become a full-time varsity coach and teacher, the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. Today, Tyson lives independently, drives, fishes from his own bass boat, hunts using a rugged track chair and shares his message with audiences across the nation, his site states.

“Spring Break Revolution events are of great importance and play a key role in educating students on all the ways to remain safe during Spring Break,” Martínez said, "Safety measures that will be discussed during the various events include, but are not limited to keeping hydrated, consumption of alcohol, and practicing safe sex,” Martinez said.
