The Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Student Government Association (SGA) will welcome invited guest lecturer, The Honorable Speaker of the U. S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, and U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) for an historic visit to TAMIU Friday, Feb. 22 from 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Theatre.

As a part of the Speaker Pelosi’s trip, facilitated by Congressman Cuellar, SGA members reached out to the Speaker’s Office to extend an invitation to TAMIU when they learned that the Speaker was scheduled to attend Laredo’s WBCA events. Members worked closely with Congressman Henry Cuellar and his Laredo and Washington staff to secure the event.

In accordance with Speaker Pelosi’s wishes, Friday’s appearance is geared to students and she is looking forward to an opportunity to address them. The SGA has also extended an opportunity to attend Friday’s event to Laredo College counterparts.

TAMIU President, Dr. Pablo Arenaz, said this is a remarkable opportunity for all students to meet and hear from a national leader.

“Opportunities like this are not afforded most University campuses or students, and we applaud the initiative of our SGA officers and the support provided by Congressman Cuellar in helping to make this historic event possible,” Dr. Arenaz said.

Congressman Cuellar, a TAMIU alumnus (MBA, ’82), said, “It is an honor and a privilege for me to invite Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Laredo. And it’s an even greater honor for her to have accepted to speak at my hometown university. It’s not often that university students have the opportunity to interact with and hear first-hand from the Speaker of the House, who exemplifies what it means to be a great leader in this country. It is my hope that the TAMIU students who will participate in this forum are impacted by Speaker Pelosi’s message.”

As Friday’s event is dedicated to students, entry is ticketed and limited. All tickets have been distributed and additional tickets are not available.

Speaker Pelosi will also be participating in a press conference later in the day. She is expected to attend Friday evening’s Caballero Cocktail Reception at TAMIU’s Western Hemispheric Trade Center.
