TAMIU Earth Week 2019

Haven’t you heard? Maroon is the new green!

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) will host its annual weekly observance of Earth Week April 8-12 with a series of events aimed at fostering a week of good, green fun around campus.

The week begins Monday, April 8 at 8 a.m. in the north end of Bob Bullock Hall as students work to plant rose bushes to beautify the campus while simultaneously earning community service hours.

On Tuesday, from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m., students can bring in their aluminum, plastic and paper items for recycling and prizes. Cold drinks will be offered at a refreshing water conservation station.

Then, on Wednesday, students can make their pledge to show their support for going green and learn more about the ‘Conserve My Planet’ student program, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Student Center Patio.

On Thursday, students can strut down the catwalk in costumes designed from recycled items during the ‘R.I.O. (Recycled Items Only) Runway.’ The best costume creation winner will be awarded a $500 scholarship. The fun begins at 7 p.m. by the Residential Learning Community Pool.

Finally, Earth Week concludes Friday, April 12 with a special ceremony led by TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz who will commemorate the University’s commitment to sustainability with a plaque dedication at the north end of Bullock Hall at 9 a.m.

Throughout the week, students are encouraged to tag their Earth Week observance on social media with #MaroonIsTheNewGreen.

The University’s Earth Week observation is being coordinated by the University’s Environmental, Health and Safety Office, Housing and Residence Life and the office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration in partnership with Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management and automation.

Schneider’s 144,000 employees serve customers in over 100 countries, helping them manage energy and process in safe, reliable, efficient and sustainable ways.

This year, Earth Day will be observed globally on Monday, April 22. First celebrated in 1970, the global celebration occurs in over 192 countries. Earth Day helps bring awareness to the importance of protecting the environment while working to make the world a safer and cleaner place for all.
