TAMIU’s Phi Kappa Phi Chapter Initiates 77 in Ceremonies; Earns Award, Offers Scholarships

The Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Chapter 296 of the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has initiated 77 new members in recent Spring ceremonies. 

The Chapter has also been awarded the 2018-19 Gold Circle of Excellence Award, given to the Society’s top chapters excelling in recognizing and promoting academic excellence on their local campus and engaging the community of scholars in service to others. 

“The Circle of Honor program recognizes Phi Kappa Phi chapters that have gone above and beyond to promote academic excellence on their campuses,” said Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd of the TAMIU Award. 

The Circle of Excellence distinction is a part of the Society’s Circle of Honor program,  introduced in 2018 and awarded for the first time this year. In this inaugural year, the program named 75 chapters with recognition including 16 as Platinum, 30 as Gold, and 29 as Silver. 

TAMIU’s Chapter also awarded three $500 scholarships to top TAMIU students planning to attend graduate or professional school after their Bachelor’s degree. The three students are: Max Enrique Barrientos, seeking a Master’s degree in finance; Tábata Nayaj Rodríguez Talamas,

pursuing  a Master’s degree in  Language, Literature, and Translation at TAMIU, and Klarissa Ameli Saldivar, who  will attend the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

TAMIU’s officers for Chapter 296 are: Dr. James A. Norris, outgoing president; Dr. Lola Orellano-Norris, president; Dr. Tariq Tashtoush, outgoing secretary and incoming president-elect; Dr. Peter Haruna, immediate past president;  Laura Elizondo, treasurer; Mary T. Treviño, scholarship coordinator, and Tábata Rodríguez, student vice president.

TAMIU’s Chapter was first formed in 2005.

Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine and headquartered in Baton Rouge, La., Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline honor society.  It  has chapters on more than 300 college and university campuses in North America and the Philippines. Phi Kappa Phi inducts approximately 30,000 students, faculty and staff on its chapter campuses annually.
