UTEP Professor Speaks on Science, Research and Success for Presidential Lecture Series Wednesday

An esteemed scientist from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) faculty will offer a border-focused lecture on “Science, Research and Success on the Border:  A Great Untapped Source of Excellence and Creativity,”  at the next Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Presidential Lecture Series, Wednesday, Sept 18 at 6 p.m.in the new TAMIU Academic Innovation Center, room 126. 

Dr. Keith H. Pannell, UTEP professor of Chemistry, will lead the lecture, part of the University’s 50thAnniversary celebration.  The lecture is free of charge and open to the public. 

Dr. Pannell joined UTEP in 1971 andhas received the Distinguished Achievement Award for Teaching (1989) and Research (1986), Excellence. In 2006 Professor Pannell was appointed a Welch Lecturer by the Welch Foundation. 

Supported by NSF, NIH, PRF, NATO, DOE, and the Welch Foundation, he has published some 280 articles in international journals and in 2004 was recipient of the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) National Award for research involving undergraduate students, sponsored by the Research Corporation. In 2012 Pannell  received the SW ACS Stanley Israel award for increasing diversity in Chemistry. His research focus is on organometallic chemistry.

In excess of 150 undergraduate students from his research group, and the NIH-MARC Program he directs, have progressed on to Ph.D. degrees.  They hold faculty posts  throughout the USA, including Princeton, Harvard, UT-El Paso, Oklahoma State University and more.

Pannell is a member of the ACS  and served as Local Section Chairman, National Councilor and a member of the International Affairs Committee and the Committee on Public Relations and Communications. He served on the editorial board of the ACS journal Organometallics, and the Journal of the Mexican Chemical Society. He was elected Fellow of the ACS in 2015.

A member of the Texas Academy of Science (TAS), he currently serves as immediate Past President and Associate Editor of the Texas Journal of Science.

Pannell devised and hosts a weekly public radio program, Science Studio, which has received the Texas Public Health Association Media Award.

Organized through TAMIU’s University College, the Presidential Lecture Series is an occasional series at the University that seeks to bring innovative thinkers and creators to the University in public lectures open to both students and the University community at large. Past lecturers have included Dr. Mark Lilla, Dr. Tomas Jiménez, Nadine Strossen, Tatiana Clouthier and Dr. Renato Aguilera.
