You are What You Search: TAMIU Course Delves into Data Analytics, Careers

You’ve decided to buy a new coffee mug. After perusing through Google and Amazon, you come across one that seems perfect. It’s the right price and the right size, but the color isn’t your favorite. Abandoning your search for the meantime, you head over to Facebook to check your news feed.

As you’re scrolling through posts and comments, you come across a placed advertisement for that very same mug, this time with a caption reading, “The perfect mug for you!” Coincidence? Not really…

This Spring, Texas A&M International University’s University College is offering a Signature Course focusing on these instances.

The course, “Job Opportunities With Data,” looks at data analytics and how these insights are used to influence business strategies and organizational goals.

The non-technical, survey course serves as an introduction to the way analytics are currently used in contemporary American society and throughout the world.

Students will trace through the history of data analytics and how this information is used in business, government, and international communities. For-profit businesses and non-profit organizations that include both healthcare and the government at state and federal levels will be studied.

Currently, large organizations use data analytics to extract business intelligence from data trends and patterns to align their businesses and organizations to meet their objective. Topics covered throughout the course include data mining, data science, Big Data, and management information systems.

Various Signature Courses are offered to current TAMIU freshman students. These courses offer a unique experience for students as they focus on unraveling a key question through multiple or interdisciplinary perspectives. Courses also integrate co-curricular campus activities as students actively engage in a teamwork research project.
