The TAMIU-LBV Literacy Partnership received a generous donation of $2,000 recently from Laredo’s League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Council No. 7 in support of literacy tutoring services provided to students whose first language is Spanish.

José González, LULAC Council No. 7 vice president  and Nora Montemayor, the Council’s Education Committee chair, met with TAMIU President Dr. Pablo Arenaz and Dr. Xuesong Wang, TAMIU associate professor of Education and TAMIU-LBV Partnership executive director, at TAMIU’s campus to deliver the donation.

Dr. Arenaz noted that the TAMIU-LBV Partnership is a collaborative effort and appreciates community support.

“The TAMIU-LBV Partnership  is a collaborative that really enables us to deliver the University’s mission of literacy to a group of young students who truly excel when provided this opportunity.  We are especially  honored to be able to number the LULAC Council No. 7 among our community partners in this important program,” Dr. Arenaz said.

Dr. Wang concurred and said the Partnership is grateful for LULAC Council No. 7’s donation.

“We greatly appreciate LULAC No. 7’s donation to the Partnership, which supports the expansion of our virtual Literacy Centers, in which struggling young readers can get one-on-one tutoring with Partnership tutors,” she said.

The Partnership’s tutoring services provide children with a stronger early literacy foundation to support future academic success, she explained. The donation will help support the Partnership’s new virtual tutoring model, she added.

The TAMIU-LBV Literacy Partnership is a community engagement initiative of TAMIU, funded by the Lamar Bruni Vergara Charitable Trust.  The collaborative effort includes Laredo College, Laredo Independent School District, and United ISD.  Together, the TAMIU-LBV Partnership has established a total of nine Literacy Centers at eight elementary schools to better promote grade-level reading in early elementary years.

Since 2015, Partnership tutors have provided one-on-one tutoring in local elementary schools.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Partnership recently revised its face-to-face tutoring model into a virtual delivery format.

LULAC Council No. 7 has supported the Partnership since its inception in 2015 and continues to do so as educators and students immerse themselves in remote learning. By now, its total donation to the Partnership is above $10,000, Dr. Wang explained.

LULAC is the largest and oldest Hispanic organization in the United States. It works to advance the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating at more than 1,000 LULAC councils nationwide.

Since 2015, using a research-based intervention model, the Partnership has assisted thousands of struggling young readers.  Some were 1.5 to 2 years behind their peers in terms of literacy development, but through these interventions these young students have closed the gap and improved literacy development measurably.

TAMIU is open and providing all services. Facial coverings are required inside and outside all campus buildings.  Social distancing and gathering standards are observed.

TAMIU’s Fall semester 2020 classes end Wednesday, November 25  with final exams delivered online Dec. 1 - 8.  Spring 2021 classes begin Monday, Jan. 25, 2021.
