TAMIU’s ‘Closer Than Ever’ Program Focuses on Financial Assistance for Former Students

A Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) program is helping former students realize they can still conclude their degree journey… and often in less time than they think. And TAMIU says there’s millions of ways it can help this happen this Summer and Fall.

“The University will provide over $3 million in student grants under TAMIU CARES and CRRSAA programs this Summer and Fall '21 semesters. These emergency grants assist students experiencing financial hardship, housing and food insecurity, medical expenses, and lack of educational support and supplies,” said Scheiby González Fisher, TAMIU executive director of Outreach and Pre-College Programs.

“In addition, a TAMIU grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board through the Texas Reskilling Support Fund Grant Program provides support. Through this Grant, students within one year of completing their degree may be eligible for a scholarship of up to $2,500 for each of the Summer and Fall '21 semesters,” González Fisher explained.

She said TAMIU’s hands-on, helping-those-in-need initiative has a strong track record.

“Through TAMIU’s ‘Closer Than Ever’ Initiative, 177 students have completed their undergraduate degrees with 49 expected to graduate this May,” González Fisher noted.

Launched in 2018, TAMIU’s “Closer Than Ever” helps students determine the best options available to them to complete their degree. Interested students take their first steps to do so by visiting a dedicated TAMIU website: https://www.tamiu.edu/closerthanever/

With the University’s planned commitment to a full on-campus experience this Fall, it’s a great time to complete that delayed degree journey, González-Fisher said.

“We’re really reaching out to former students through direct, targeted outreach to encourage them to renew ties with the University and establish next steps for that full University experience. We’ll help them confirm their time to completion with an easy online form that collects basic information on the student’s academic history. We’ll then establish contact and discuss options. We encourage all to explore these new and continuing options available to them,” she urged, “there’s no time like the present, and we believe they’ll find they really are closer than they think.”
