Do you wish to return to college soon to complete your higher education degree? If so, this Fall at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) is the perfect time to do so.

TAMIU is committed to helping all students determine the best options available for them to complete their degree through its #Comeback: New Programs for Resuming Students. Offering two distinct options, the Programs help all students determine the best choices available for them to complete their degree at TAMIU.

TAMIU has a $750,000 grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s (THECB) Texas Reskilling Support Fund Grant Program to provide support to students returning to TAMIU to complete their degree or to start a graduate degree.

This is the second round of funding that TAMIU receives to support students through the THECB’s Texas Reskilling Support Fund Grant Program.

Scheiby González Fisher, TAMIU interim associate vice president for Student Success, said this program has already provided over 425 students with the opportunity to get back on track to graduate with a degree and succeed in the workforce.

“The program targets both displaced Texas workers who need to reskill or upskill to move quickly back into the workforce, including opportunities for students seeking graduate degrees, students who have previously stopped out of higher education institutions without completing a post-secondary credential (Bachelor’s degree), or students who graduated in 2021 but did not enroll in an institution of higher education since graduation,” González Fisher said.

Students must not have enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution in the previous long academic semester, González Fisher said.

“We know there are many former TAMIU students and students seeking graduate degrees that could be helped by this program, and we’re encouraging them reach out and explore this option with us,” she explained.  “We also encourage students who did not enroll immediately after high school graduation to contact us.”

Through this program, students can receive a scholarship between $500 and $2,500 per semester/term towards tuition and fees, or cost of attendance.

“Criteria for consideration include that students must be Texas Residents, eligible for In-State Tuition, have filed a FAFSA application, affirm they were affected by COVID-19 and enroll at least part-time,” González Fisher noted, “Funding is available for Summer and Fall 2022 without consideration of financial need.  Eligible and interested students can apply at go.tamiu.edu/reskill.

Additionally, TAMIU  has received a $125,000 grant from the THECB’s Texas Completion Repayment Grant Program to provide critical support to students with an outstanding balance to facilitate their return to higher education.

González Fisher shared details.

“This program provides a great opportunity for students who have not been able to enroll at the University due to an outstanding institutional balance. It can enable them to return to postsecondary education to complete their degree,” she explained.

Students must have incurred the institutional outstanding balance before Summer 2022 for consideration, González Fisher noted.

"We know there are many former TAMIU students that could really be helped by this program, so we are encouraging them to contact us,” she said, “They could receive up to $1,000 to clear outstanding institutional balances and funding is available for Summer and Fall 2022.”

To be considered, students must be Texas residents, enrolled at least part-time during the semester for which funding is received, incurred the debt before Summer 2022, and affirm they were affected by COVID-19.  Eligible and interested students can apply via go.tamiu.edu/repay

Funding for both the Texas Completion Repayment Grant Program and the Texas Reskilling Support Fund Grant Program will only be available through September 30. Students are urged to take advantage of this opportunity to support their academic endeavors.
