Alums and students from Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) recently garnered several accolades during the Gaining Equity in Training for Public Health Informatics and Technology (GET PHIT) First Annual Summit, held Sept. 14, 2023, in Houston, TX.

Their efforts garnered two distinct awards, including being named Best Poster Winner and Runner-Up Best Poster.

The poster winner, “Does your major matter? Examining the relationship between students’ academic majors and the benefits of a Public Health Informatics Undergraduate Research Experience,” was presented by undergraduate Biology major Nereyda Molina and graduate Psychology major Jenna Arsuaga.

The runner-up poster winner, “The Significance of Socio-cultural and Demographic Factors in Bipolar Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder,” was presented by TAMIU alum and Texas A&M University Ph.D. student Saliha García and undergraduate Biology major Ana Ramos.

Also in attendance and presenting their projects were undergraduate Public Health major Lizett Cruz, whose project was titled, “Correlation Between Abortion, Socioeconomic Factors, and Legislations in Texas and California,” and undergraduate Management Information Systems and Data Analytics major Simileoluwa Odunuga with a project titled, “E-Prevention is Better than Cure.”

The GET PHIT Summit, held at the Cooley University Life Center in Houston, Texas, was made possible through the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health (SPH) and School of Biomedical Informatics (SBMI). Students involved with GET PHIT through a boot camp or internship opportunity submitted a research project highlighting their work as a GET PHIT program participant.

A GET PHIT Summer Bootcamp is scheduled at TAMIU July 8 – 19, 2024. Applications open in January 2024. For more information on the bootcamp, visit https://www.uth.edu/get-phit/bootcamp.htm
