Locally based art program Cultivarte Laredo presented its 2022 Artists-in-Residence (AIR) exhibit, “Place/d: Colocados en Contexto”  at Texas A&M International University's (TAMIU) Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Gallery.

The exhibit was presented with support from TAMIU’s College of Arts and Sciences, department of Fine and Performing Arts, and was on display through Nov. 11.

The exhibit featured the work of visual artists and TAMIU alumni Diego Canales ('18), Karla Gabriela De La Fuente, Nansi Guevara, Erika Ordoñez ('07), Itzel Vilches, and Nestor. Artists are currently based in several different cities across the state and country, including Brownsville, Chicago, Houston, Mission and San Antonio.

The exhibition included art installations, assemblage, handmade paper, and illustrations.

“The artists are located in different cities, but are native to South Texas. Five of our AIR artists are native to Laredo, but are now based in other cities,” says Maritza Bautista, exhibit curator, residency mentor and Daphne Art Foundation executive director.

“Place communicates. It defines the interconnectedness between people, space, and objects. In the case of this exhibition, ‘Place/d: Colocados en Contexto,’ the artists’ place is within their own artwork. It is what determines how much they were willing to push their ideas, research, and materials to create their artwork during their residencies,” Bautista affirmed.

For the past two years Cultivarte Laredo, a program of the Daphne Art Foundation, has fostered a supportive culture for artists by cultivating ideas, reimagining artist spaces, and transforming the community through opportunities for artists including residencies, grants and exhibitions.

Currently, Cultivarte Laredo hosts two artists-in-residencies, a virtual residency and a studio residency. Local artists are also featured via their social media platforms.

The Daphne Art Foundation is a nonprofit arts organization whose mission supports and promotes the creation, presentation, study, and appreciation of visual, performing, and media art in Laredo.
