Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students showcased service-learning projects conducted with local non-profit and government organizations at the annual Service-Learning Expo Tuesday, Nov. 8 from 8 a.m. –  noon  in the Student Center (SC) Ballroom.

Admission was free and open to the public.

Some 100 students showcased 100 projects and represented three TAMIU service-learning courses.

Students were judged based on their presentations by University faculty, administrators, and guest judges. Certificates and recognition followed at an Award Ceremony at the Expo’s conclusion.

The books are used by students in the Project and share a cultural relevance that increases the likelihood of improved literacy for the elementary school participants.

Service-learning is an educational experience in which students participate in a TAMIU credit-bearing course paired with an organized community service component. Key to service-learning is guided and structured reflection that supports learning by enhancing course content comprehension, integrating academic and service concepts, and developing civic/social justice responsibility.
